We are now meeting on Friday mornings. At our November 21 meeting\, we will discuss Michelle Young’s 2025 work of nonfiction\, The Art Spy.   This work focuses on the effort of museums and artists in France (principally Paris) to protect their cultural heritage by moving and hiding paintings and sculptures (and artists) in the days leading up to\, and the months during\, the Nazi invasion and conquest of Paris during World War II.  It focuses on the heroics of Rose Valland\, an employee of the Jeu de Paume museum\, who stayed in Paris while Nazis used her museum as a headquarters for looting; she quietly kept notes about where the art was being taken. Also important in this book is Paul Rosenberg\, the main art dealer for Picasso and Matisse\, who needed to protect his collection and\, being Jewish\, had additional reasons to hide and\, eventually\, to leave France. \n\n\n\nCome join us on September 27 for a lively discussion of a great artist. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nMember’s home\, address was given in informational email to mailing list \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is open to all WWG members. \n\n\n\nAny Questions?\n\n\n\nPlease email the Bookworms Chair

We try to avoid conflicts with holidays and summer vacations.   \n\n\n\nAt our Saturday\, September 27 meeting\, we will discuss Paul Fisher’s 2022  biography:  The Grand Affair: John Singer Sargent in His World.  It is OK to read a different book about Sargent instead\, but this one is full of fascinating information about his art and his very full life.  Sargent is known for his society portraits\, but he also painted a number of portraits of people who were less known as well as a variety of scenes from places such as Venice.  Known as an American painter\, he grew up in Europe and lived (Italy\, Paris\, London\, etc.) and traveled extensively there for much of his life.  He knew a number of the famous writers and artists of his era. In short\, there is much to enjoy and discuss.

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday\, May 3\, at 9:30 am. \n\n\n\nWe will be discussing Hayden Herrera’s biography Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo. As always\, it is OK to read a different book about Frida—or\, in this case\, to read one about Diego Rivera since their lives are so intertwined.
