FIRST PLACE: Shop Window Reflections by Betty Jameson This is a lovely piece. The artist manages to combine realism and abstraction. It is composed in an interesting way, causing the eye to travel around the painting. There is good recognizable imagery in it, with the flower peeking through. It has a nice depth of light and patterns of darkness in it. The splatter of white helps to subdue the colors.

The brush marks are loose and artistic, not tight or prescribed. The composition is a nice dance between the palette and kitty. There is enough patterning to carry the eye around the painting. The direction of light from left to right is good. It is a handsome painting.

THIRD PLACE: Antiquated Technology by Lynn Zwern The abstraction is enjoyable and very sophisticated. The color palette is exquisite. The painting is very well crafted. There is a nice quality of paint exploration. There is a lot of implied imagery with a cosmic feel. Good textures of lichen and moss.

1. Merit Award Tween Tude by Carla Simons This is a delightful portrait with its relaxed pose. The skin tones are beautiful, and the shadows on the face are good. The merging of the hoodie with the background is effective.

2. Merit Award Montana Hibernation by Dan Spanton This is a dreamy landscape. It is loose and wet. The scene is very abstracted and simplified, but there is enough representation to give focus.
3. Merit Award Golden Coast by Carol Sue Witt This is tropical. The turquoise blue is perfect next to the quin gold cliff. The composition in the foreground leads the eye back to the tree and bluff. The patterning in the sea leads the eye back to the distance.

4. Merit Award Bali Hai by Courtney Brown The jewel landscape is captivating with its simplified shapes that are basic and primal. The atmosphere in the sky is magical, and there is a tiny edge of a wave at the horizon line. The color is exquisite.
5. Merit Award Canyon by Eileen Pestorius This western landscape is loose and painterly with incredible atmosphere and receding distance. The light that is created really makes one see sunset. This is an incredible vista of the west.

6. Merit Award Wise by Shevawn Eisman I like the fact that the brush strokes in the backgrounds and those on the owl are similar but not identical. There is a good pattern of brush strokes. The eyes of the owl are penetrating and powerful. Its expression is dramatic.

7. Merit Award Fields of Glory by Debbie Willhite I enjoyed this abstraction. There is nice texture and color. I like the gold dust on it. The composition is strong and inviting.
