Painting Bali Hai — 4. Merit Award Bali Hai by Courtney Brown The jewel landscape is captivating with its simplified shapes that are basic and primal. The atmosphere in the sky is magical, and there is a tiny edge of a wave at the horizon line. The color is exquisite.

I like the fact that the brush strokes in the backgrounds and those on the owl are similar but not identical. There is a good pattern of brush strokes. FIRST PLACE: Shop Window Reflections by Betty Jameson
This is a lovely piece. The artist manages to combine realism and abstraction. It is composed in an interesting way, causing the eye to travel around the painting. There is good recognizable imagery in it, with the flower peeking through. It has a nice depth of light and patterns of darkness in it.
